Different authors accept between four and 18 species in the genus. They are native plants of South America from Brazil west to Peru and south to southern Argentina (Chubut Province). Locarno in Switzerland, with its mild Mediterranean climate, is famous for its bougainvilleas.[citation needed]</p><p>Although it is frost-sensitive and hardy in U.S. Hardiness Zones 9b and 10, bougainvillea can be used as a houseplant or hanging basket in cooler climates. In the landscape, it makes an excellent hot season plant, and its drought tolerance makes it ideal for warm climates year-round. Its high salt tolerance makes it a natural choice for color in coastal regions. It can be pruned into a standard, but is also grown along fence lines, on walls, in containers and hanging baskets, and as a hedge or an accent plant. The climbing stem is 1–4 metres (3 ft 3 in–13 ft 1 in) long.[5] The leaves are 8–10 centimetres (3.1–3.9 in) long, petiolated, alternate, tough and leathery, heart-shaped, with toothed and spiny margins. Also the midrib of the underside of the leaves are provided with spines. The flowers, very fragrant, are small, yellowish or greenish, gathered in axillary racemes. The flowering period in Mediterranean regions extends from September to November. The fruits are globose berries, gathered in clusters, which ripen in Autumn. They are initially red, later turn black. They have a diameter of 8–10 millimetres (0.31–0.39 in)[5] and contain one to three tiny and round seeds. Male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.</p><h3><strong>Propagation</strong></h3><p>Seed - sow March in a warm greenhouse. This note probably refers to the tropical members of the genus, seeds of plants from cooler areas seem to require a period of cold stratification, some species taking 2 or more years to germinate. We sow the seed of temperate species in a cold frame as soon as we receive it, and would sow the seed as soon as it is ripe if we could obtain it then. When the seedlings eventually germinate, prick them out into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first year, though we normally grow them on in pots for 2 years. Plant them out into their permanent positions in early summer. Division in early spring as new growth begins. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a lightly shaded position in a cold frame, planting them out once they are well established in the summer. The harvest takes place before the seed husks harden. The fruits are cooked after removing the seeds, often together with lentils. They are also inserted. The seeds are eaten roasted. There are two different forms: one with light green fruits, which is generally preferred, and the other with dark green fruits.</p> <p>The plant is as with all cucurbits, a prolific vine, and is grown as an annual. The plant also is prickly with small thorns similar to the zucchini. The fruit is approximately spherical, and 5–8 cm in diameter The seeds may also be roasted and eaten. Tinda is a famous nickname among Punjabi families in India. This unique squash-like gourd is native to South Asia, very popular in Indian and Pakistani cooking with curry and many gourmet dishes. Fruits turn violet at maturity.</p> <p>Passiflora adenopoda is a fun and easy plant to grow, the plant is a vine that will quickly grow into support by tendrils from the stem. When the plant is about 2m long it will start to profusely produce lots of flowers, with have a nice smell and attract lots of pollinators!</p> <p>Then fruits will appear, little green fruits the size of a plum, filled with seeds covered in a mucilage of bright orange color (DO NOT EAT GREEN, it is poisonous). When mature, the fruits will become purple and are really sweet in taste, great for drinks of fresh fruit.</p> <p>         Passiflora adenopoda is a tropical vine plant. This variety, native from Central America grows happily more than 4m but starts making flowers at just 2m from the base. These seeds come from Costa Rica, where it sometimes grows among people's gardens. They love full sun, but may have a little shade, which makes them have fewer flowers, it has three to five-lobed leaves of a light green color. The plant likes high soil humidity.</p> <p>This plant is a host plant for Heliconius charithonia butterfly, they lay the eggs on the leaves for their caterpillars to eat.</p> <p>Culture: sow the seeds 1 in. deep, on a group of 1 to 3 seeds on individual pots. Loose, well-drained soil is very important for good germination, but the plants won’t mind growing even on clay soils, a soil pH of 5–6 will give the best results. Plant a month after the last frost once the soil has warmed up, or in tropical regions, any time of the year. It may be grown outdoors in zones (USA 8-11) or indoors in a greenhouse. The plant may make flowers after some 4 months of growth depending on the conditions and fruits will develop just 1 month later. The flowers of this vine have the shape of human female genitals, hence the Latin name of the genus "Clitoria", from "clitoris". (Synonyms: Clitoris principissae.)</p> <p>This plant is native to tropical equatorial Asia (Indonesia and Malaysia), but has been introduced to Africa, Australia and America.</p> <p>It is a perennial herbaceous plant, with elliptic, obtuse leaves. It grows as a vine or creeper, doing well in moist, neutral soil. The most striking feature about this plant is the color of its flowers, a vivid deep blue; solitary, with light yellow markings. They are about 4 cm (1.6 in) long by 3 cm (1.2 in) wide. Some varieties yield white flowers.</p> <p>The fruits are 5–7 cm (2.0–2.8 in) long, flat pods with six to ten seeds in each pod. In Kelantan, east part of Malaysia, by adding a few buds of this flower in a pot while cooking white rice will add bluish tint on the rice which is served with other side dishes and such meal is called nasi kerabu. In Thailand, a syrupy blue drink is made called nam dok anchan (น้ำดอกอัญชัน), it is sometimes consumed with a drop of sweet lime juice to increase acidity and turn the juice into pink-purple. In Burmese and Thai cuisines, the flowers are also dipped in batter and fried. Butterfly pea flower tea is made from the ternatea flowers and dried lemongrass and changes color depending on what is added to the liquid, with lemon juice turning it purple.</p> <h2><strong>Traditional medicine</strong></h2> <p>In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it is ascribed various qualities including memory enhancing, nootropic, antistress, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, tranquilizing, and sedative properties. In traditional Chinese medicine, due to its appearance similar to the female reproductive organ, and consistent with the Western concept of the doctrine of signatures, the plant has been ascribed properties affecting this organ.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Chemical constituents</strong></p> <p>Chemical compounds isolated from C. ternatea include various triterpenoids, flavonol glycosides, anthocyanins and steroids. It is an Indian Strawberry plant with lovely yellow blooms, and it produces small red Strawberries all summer long on a creeping evergreen carpet. Indian Strawberry is well-suited for hanging over a wall or as a ground cover plant. <br />Indian Strawberry ground cover is naturalized throughout the United States, and it is found growing in shady places in woods and grassy slopes. Indian Strawberry prefers a moist, but well-drained soil in a partially sunny position. <br />Once Indian Strawberry plants are established, the matted root sends out runners to set new plants. Indian Strawberry leaves are light green and finely haired. Indian Strawberry flowers are small, yellow, and are 5 petaled. They first appear in April and will bloom throughout the summer until fall. <br />The fruit is small, about 1/2 inch round. It is edible, but many say the taste is not noteworthy. Birds, however, love the red fruit. Another common name for this variety is Mock Strawberry ground cover. </p> <p>Sow Indian Strawberry seeds from January to April indoors. Use quality seed starter mix, and small pots or starter trays. Sow the Strawberry seeds on the surface and press the seed into the mix. It is native to eastern and southern Asia, but has been introduced to many other areas as an ornamental plant. It has been naturalized in many regions, including the southern United States, and is considered an invasive species in some regions. <br />It is considered one of the most invasive plants on the island of Réunion. </p> <p>The leaves are trifoliate, roughly veined beneath, dark green, and often persisting through the winter, arising from short crowns. Grapes can be eaten raw or they can be used for making wine, jam, juice, jelly, grape seed extract, raisins, vinegar, and grape seed oil. Grapes are a non-climacteric type of fruit, generally occurring in clusters.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Description</strong></p> <p>Grapes are a type of fruit that grow in clusters of 15 to 300, and can be crimson, black, dark blue, yellow, green, orange and pink. "White" grapes are actually green in color, and are evolutionarily derived from the purple grape. Mutations in two regulatory genes of white grapes turn off production of anthocyanins, which are responsible for the color of purple grapes.  Anthocyanins and other pigment chemicals of the larger family of polyphenols in purple grapes are responsible for the varying shades of purple in red wines. Grapes are typically an ellipsoid shape resembling a prolate spheroid.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>History</strong></p> <p>The cultivation of the domesticated grape began 6,000–8,000 years ago in the Near East. The earliest archeological evidence for a dominant position of wine-making in human culture dates from 8,000 years ago in Georgia.</p> <p>Yeast, one of the earliest domesticated microorganisms, occurs naturally on the skins of grapes, leading to the innovation of alcoholic drinks such as wine. The earliest known production occurred around 8,000 years ago on the territory of Georgia. During an extensive gene-mapping project, archaeologists analyzed the heritage of more than 110 modern grape cultivars, and narrowed their origin to a region in Georgia, where wine residues were also discovered on the inner surfaces of 8,000-year-old ceramic storage jars. The oldest winery was found in Armenia, dating to around 4000 BC. By the 9th century AD the city of Shiraz was known to produce some of the finest wines in the Middle East. Thus it has been proposed that Syrah red wine is named after Shiraz, a city in Persia where the grape was used to make Shirazi wine. Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics record the cultivation of purple grapes, and history attests to the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans growing purple grapes for both eating and wine production. The growing of grapes would later spread to other regions in Europe, as well as North Africa, and eventually in North America.</p> <p> </p> <p>In North America, native grapes belonging to various species of the Vitis genus proliferate in the wild across the continent, and were a part of the diet of many Native Americans, but were considered by European colonists to be unsuitable for wine. Vitis vinifera cultivars were imported for that purpose.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Distribution and production</strong></p> <p>According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 75,866 square kilometers of the world are dedicated to grapes. Approximately 71% of world grape production is used for wine, 27% as fresh fruit, and 2% as dried fruit. A portion of grape production goes to producing grape juice to be reconstituted for fruits canned "with no added sugar" and "100% natural". The area dedicated to vineyards is increasing by about 2% per year.</p> <p> </p> <p>There are no reliable statistics that break down grape production by variety. It is believed that the most widely planted variety is Sultana, also known as Thompson Seedless, with at least 3,600 km2. (880,000 acres) dedicated to it. The second most common variety is Airén. Other popular varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon blanc, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Grenache, Tempranillo, Riesling and Chardonnay.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Juice</strong></p> <p>Grape juice is obtained from crushing and blending grapes into a liquid. The juice is often sold in stores or fermented and made into wine, brandy or vinegar. In the wine industry, grape juice that contains 7–23% of pulp, skins, stems and seeds is often referred to as "must". In North America, the most common grape juice is purple and made from Concord grapes while white grape juice is commonly made from Niagara grapes, both of which are varieties of native American grapes, a different species from European wine grapes. In California, Sultana (known there as Thompson Seedless) grapes are sometimes diverted from the raisin or table market to produce white juice.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong><em>Health claims</em></strong></p> <p><strong>French paradox</strong></p> <p>Comparing diets among Western countries, researchers have discovered that although the French tend to eat higher levels of animal fat, the incidence of heart disease remains low in France. This phenomenon has been termed the French paradox, and is thought to occur from protective benefits of regularly consuming red wine. Apart from potential benefits of alcohol itself, including reduced platelet aggregation and vasodilation,  polyphenols (e.g., resveratrol) mainly in the grape skin provide other suspected health benefits, such as:</p> <p> </p> <p>    Alteration of molecular mechanisms in blood vessels, reducing susceptibility to vascular damage</p> <p>    Decreased activity of angiotensin, a systemic hormone causing blood vessel constriction that would elevate blood pressure</p> <p>    Increased production of the vasodilator hormone, nitric oxide (endothelium-derived relaxing factor)</p> <p> </p> <p>Although adoption of wine consumption is not recommended by some health authorities, a significant volume of research indicates moderate consumption, such as one glass of red wine a day for women and two for men, may confer health benefits. Emerging evidence is that wine polyphenols like resveratrol  provide physiological benefit whereas alcohol itself may have protective effects on the cardiovascular system. More may be seen in the article the Long-term effects of alcohol.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Resveratrol</strong></p> <p>Synthesized by many plants, resveratrol apparently serves antifungal and other defensive properties. Dietary resveratrol has been shown to modulate the metabolism of lipids and to inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoproteins and aggregation of platelets.</p> <p> </p> <p>Resveratrol is found in widely varying amounts among grape varieties, primarily in their skins and seeds, which, in muscadine grapes, have about one hundred times higher concentration than pulp. Fresh grape skin contains about 50 to 100 micrograms of resveratrol per gram.</p> <p> </p> <p>In vitro studies indicate that protection of the genome through antioxidant actions may be a general function of resveratrol. In laboratory studies with mice, resveratrol has transcriptional overlap with the beneficial effects of calorie restriction in heart, skeletal muscle and brain. Both dietary interventions inhibit gene expression associated with heart and skeletal muscle aging, and prevent age-related heart failure.</p> <p> </p> <p>Resveratrol is the subject of several human clinical trials, among which the most advanced is a one year dietary regimen in a Phase III study of elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Anthocyanins and other phenolics</strong></p> <p>Anthocyanins tend to be the main polyphenolics in purple grapes whereas flavan-3-ols (i.e. catechins) are the more abundant phenolic in white varieties.[31] Total phenolic content, a laboratory index of antioxidant strength, is higher in purple varieties due almost entirely to anthocyanin density in purple grape skin compared to absence of anthocyanins in white grape skin.[31] It is these anthocyanins that are attracting the efforts of scientists to define their properties for human health.[32] Phenolic content of grape skin varies with cultivar, soil composition, climate, geographic origin, and cultivation practices or exposure to diseases, such as fungal infections.</p> <p> </p> <p>Red wine may offer health benefits more so than white because potentially beneficial compounds are present in grape skin, and only red wine is fermented with skins. The amount of fermentation time a wine spends in contact with grape skins is an important determinant of its resveratrol content.[33] Ordinary non-muscadine red wine contains between 0.2 and 5.8 mg/L,[34] depending on the grape variety, because it is fermented with the skins, allowing the wine to absorb the resveratrol. By contrast, a white wine contains lower phenolic contents because it is fermented after removal of skins.</p> <p> </p> <p>Wines produced from muscadine grapes may contain more than 40 mg/L, an exceptional phenolic content. In muscadine skins, ellagic acid, myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and trans-resveratrol are major phenolics. Accustomed to the domesticated grapes (Vitis vinifera) native to Europe, the rampant vines and fruits of the wild grapes encouraged grape connoisseurs to hybridize various species to produce larger, sweeter fruits for wine, juice, and jellies. While a few native wild grapes have been cultivated, most domesticated grapes are vinifera cultivars.</p> <p>The main differences between wild and cultivated grapes are the size and sweetness of the fruits, pest and disease resistance, and propagation. In general, wild grapes tend to have smaller fruits than domesticated grapes.</p> <p>They grow easily and are much less fettered with disease and pests than cultivated grape cultivars, making them quite prolific growers. Another reason they can be classified as wild grape weeds.</p> <p>Wild grapes produce fruit ranging from 1/8- to 1-inch in diameter.
